These are all Lois Ventura designed boxes from her books ‘Building Beautiful Boxes with Your Band Saw’ and
‘Sculpted Band Saw Boxes’. I think of them as wooden art that can also hold jewelry. They’re a natural for me
because I’m at my band saw so often doing my pooches. (The big ones that is, the business card holders are made
largely on my scroll saw.)

I do sometimes reverse the original patterns and like to use a wood she recommended not using - oak. She thought
large pore woods like oak let the flocking glue seep through to the outside of the drawers. Flocking glue is the same
color of the flocking felt. But I got around that problem by applying a couple good coats of wiping varnish inside the
drawers first. Arts and Crafts, Mission-style or Craftsman furniture (goes by many names) uses quarter sawn oak
because of it’s wonderful medullary rays which appear as flakes or bands of lighter translucent material. Will cutting
regular, or plain sawn, oak at all the angles of the boxes gives their outsides medullary rays on steroids! I think this
shows up pretty well on the larger photos you get when you click these. I don’t think any other wood does this as
well as oak does. But of course I’ll keep experimenting.

I also like to put more dividers inside the drawers, basing this on customer feed back.

The insides of all the drawers are flocked to protect the jewelry. The finish is a few coats of oil, followed by some
good wax. So their maintenance is just a good wiping when dusty and a little liquid wax every few years. But of
course this also means don’t put them somewhere they’ll get and stay wet for long periods of time.
